Cheat Sheet: Taking Care of Sex Toys

Proper care and maintenance of sex toys are essential to ensure they remain hygienic, safe, and in good condition. By following some simple cleaning and storage tips, you can extend the life of your toys and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience each time. Here’s a quick guide to keeping your sex toys clean and well-maintained.

Cleaning Your Sex Toys

Cleaning sex toys after each use is crucial, as it removes bodily fluids, bacteria, and any residue from lubricants. The method of cleaning will depend on the material of the toy:

  • Silicone, Glass, and Metal Toys: These non-porous materials are easy to clean and sanitize. Wash them with warm water and mild, fragrance-free soap, then rinse thoroughly. For extra sanitation, non-electronic silicone, glass, and metal toys can be boiled for 3-5 minutes. Some glass toys can even be placed in the dishwasher, but always check the manufacturer’s guidelines first.

  • Jelly, Rubber, and TPE (Thermoplastic Elastomer) Toys: These materials are porous, meaning they can harbor bacteria more easily. Clean them with warm water and mild soap, but avoid submerging them in water if they have electronic parts. For porous toys, it’s especially important to avoid sharing or consider using a condom over the toy during use to add a layer of protection.

  • Electric or Battery-Operated Toys: Remove batteries before cleaning, and avoid getting water near electronic components. Use a damp cloth with mild soap to wipe down the toy’s surface, followed by a clean, wet cloth to remove soap residue. Some toys are waterproof; if so, you can rinse them under water, but check the manufacturer’s instructions to confirm.

Storing Your Toys

Proper storage is just as important as cleaning:

  • Dry Completely: After washing, allow your toys to air dry completely to avoid any trapped moisture, which can lead to mold or bacteria growth.

  • Use Storage Bags: Many toys come with storage bags or cases, which are perfect for keeping them dust-free and protected from other materials. Silicone toys, in particular, should be stored separately, as direct contact with other silicone items can cause them to degrade.

  • Keep in a Cool, Dry Place: Store toys in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight or extreme temperatures, as heat can damage the material and shorten the toy’s lifespan.

Regular Maintenance and Checks

Inspect your toys regularly for any cracks, tears, or changes in texture. If a toy shows signs of wear or damage, it’s best to replace it to avoid irritation or injury.

By following these care guidelines, you can ensure your toys remain in good condition and provide a safe, enjoyable experience each time.
